(Ayat) — Recognizing the Signs of Allah in Creation and Revelation
Book I · Knowing Allah — Article 17 of 25
Opening Reflection
The world is full of things we have learned to see without truly noticing.
The sky changes color. Rain enters dead soil and life rises. A bird crosses distances without a map drawn by human hands. The body repairs a wound while its owner sleeps. Conscience recognizes that cruelty and compassion are not equal.
The Quran calls such realities آيَات (ayat — signs). The same Arabic word is used for verses of the Quran and signs within creation. One is revelation recited; the other is creation observed. Both direct the attentive heart toward Allah.
We will show them Our signs in the horizons and within themselves until it becomes clear to them that this is the truth.
— Quran 41:53
Imam al-Sa'di رحمه الله wrote in his tafsir that this verse is a divine promise — that Allah will continue to reveal آيَات (ayat) in the external world and within the human being itself until the truth becomes undeniable to those who reflect with sincerity.
A Sign Points Beyond Itself
A sign is not the destination. It directs the traveler. The order, dependence, beauty, power, and intelligibility of creation invite questions: Why is there something rather than nothing? Why does the universe possess patterns minds can study? Why do human beings seek meaning, truth, beauty, and moral accountability?
Islam does not ask people to worship nature. The sun, moon, trees, and stars are created servants. Their beauty belongs to the One who designed them. Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah رحمه الله wrote in Miftāḥ Dār al-Sa'ādah that the universe is like a vast book — every creature a letter, every phenomenon a sentence — and the one who reads it with a sound heart arrives at knowledge of the Author.
Signs in the Heavens and Earth
Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and earth and the alternation of night and day are signs for people of understanding.
— Quran 3:190
The verse does not praise observation alone. The following verse describes people who remember Allah while standing, sitting, and lying down and reflect upon creation:
رَبَّنَا مَا خَلَقْتَ هَٰذَا بَاطِلًا ۚ سُبْحَانَكَ فَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ
Our Lord, You have not created all this without purpose. Glory be to You, so protect us from the punishment of the Fire.
— Quran 3:191
Knowledge becomes spiritually fruitful when it produces remembrance, humility, and recognition of purpose. The believer can study astronomy, biology, medicine, geology, or physics and see created processes more clearly. Scientific explanations of how something operates do not answer every question of why anything exists or who gave those processes their reality.
Signs Within Yourself
And on the earth are signs for those with sure faith, and also within yourselves. Will you not then see?
— Quran 51:20–21
Consider the self: a body formed from matter yet alive, consciousness able to examine itself, memory carrying a past that no longer physically exists, language turning inner meanings into sound, moral awareness that distinguishes betrayal from loyalty, and a heart that possesses the world yet can remain unsatisfied.
The human being is not proof of personal greatness. The human being is evidence of dependence. Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله wrote in Miftāḥ Dār al-Sa'ādah that the human soul is itself one of the greatest آيَات (ayat) — because it combines matter and spirit, knowledge and ignorance, strength and fragility, in a way that points unmistakably to a Creator who designed it with purpose.
The فِطْرَة (Fiṭrah)
Allah created humanity upon a natural disposition called the فِطْرَة (fiṭrah).
Direct your face toward the religion, inclining to truth — the natural way of Allah upon which He created humanity.
— Quran 30:30
The فِطْرَة (fiṭrah) includes an original receptivity to recognizing and worshipping the Creator. It can be covered by upbringing, desire, pride, trauma, culture, or distraction — but its call may reappear in moments of wonder, danger, grief, or honesty.
Prophet Mohammed ﷺ said: "Every child is born upon the فِطْرَة (fiṭrah). Then their parents make them a Jew, a Christian, or a Magian." — Sahih al-Bukhari 1385
(Fiṭrah) is not a substitute for revelation. Human intuition can be distorted. Revelation corrects and guides the natural disposition.
Revelation Is the Clearest Sign
Creation tells us there is wisdom, power, knowledge, and purpose. Revelation tells us who the Creator is, why we exist, how to worship, and where life is going.
The Quran invites examination of its message, consistency, moral vision, accounts, language, preservation, and effect. But its greatest purpose is guidance, not performance as an object of detached fascination. A person can admire Quranic recitation while resisting what the Quran asks of them. Recognition becomes faith when truth is received with humility and response.
(Signs) Are Not Superstitions
People sometimes ask Allah for a "sign" and then treat random numbers, social-media posts, dreams, or coincidences as binding instructions. Islam does not teach us to build major decisions upon arbitrary patterns.
Guidance comes through the Quran and authentic سُنَّة (Sunnah), lawful reasoning, consultation, اسْتِخَارَة (istikhārah), reliable evidence, and circumstances Allah facilitates without violating revelation.
A dream may encourage a person, but it does not create حَلَال (halal) and حَرَام (haram) or override clear evidence. Repeated numbers are not an Islamic guidance system. The world contains آيَات (ayat), but not every coincidence is a private coded message.
Avoiding Overclaims
The Quran repeatedly directs attention to nature, but believers should avoid forcing modern scientific claims into verses where the wording does not establish them. Science develops through evidence and revision. Attaching the Quran to a speculative theory can create unnecessary confusion if that theory changes.
The Quran is true, and genuine knowledge cannot ultimately contradict truth. But intellectual honesty requires distinguishing what the verse clearly says, what classical scholars understood, and what a modern reader is proposing as a possible reflection. Wonder does not need exaggeration.
Why Do People See Signs Differently?
Evidence alone does not operate upon a neutral heart. Pride, fear of change, social pressure, habits, and desire can affect what a person is willing to accept. The Quran often connects understanding with humility and sincerity.
Two people may see the same sky: one sees only an object to use, while another sees an object to study and a sign through which to remember its Creator. Faith is not blind — but neither is disbelief always caused by missing information. Sometimes the missing element is willingness to follow where truth leads.
Every Creature Glorifies Allah
The seven heavens, the earth, and all within them glorify Him. There is not a single thing that does not glorify Him with praise, but you do not understand their glorification.
— Quran 17:44
Creation is not spiritually empty. Every creature exists under Allah's command and testifies through its dependence, order, and worship in a manner Allah knows. Human beings are invited to join that universal تَسْبِيح (tasbih — glorification) consciously — not as one species among many, but as the only creation given the choice to do so deliberately.
Living It Today
Practice deliberate attention. Observe one created thing without immediately photographing or scrolling past it. Let it speak.
Connect observation to a Name. Rain may remind you of الرَّزَّاق (Ar-Razzāq); healing of الشَّافِي (Ash-Shāfī); intricate design of الْخَالِق (Al-Khāliq) and الْمُصَوِّر (Al-Muṣawwir).
Study seriously. Greater knowledge of creation can deepen wonder when joined to humility.
Read revelation beside creation. Reflect on Quran 3:190–191 outdoors or beneath the night sky.
Reject superstition. Do not turn coincidences into revelation or repeated numbers into guidance.
Let signs produce obedience. The purpose is not merely to feel amazed but to recognize, worship, and thank Allah.
Questions for Reflection
- What part of creation most awakens your awareness of Allah?
- Do you study creation without reflecting upon its Creator?
- Have you treated coincidences or repeated numbers as divine instructions?
- Are you willing to follow truth if it requires changing your life?
- Which Name of Allah becomes clearer when you reflect on your own existence?
A Duʿa for Sight and Reflection
(Rabbanā mā khalaqta hādhā bāṭilan, subḥānaka faqinā 'adhāban-nār)
Our Lord, You have not created all this without purpose. Glory be to You, so protect us from the punishment of the Fire.
— Quran 3:191
O Allah — open our eyes to Your آيَات (ayat) in the world around us and within ourselves. Do not let us pass through Your creation without recognizing its Author. Make our knowledge of creation increase our knowledge of You, and let every sign we encounter draw us closer to worship, gratitude, and obedience. Ameen.
A Final Reflection
The آيَات (signs) of Allah are not absent. Attention is absent.
The heavens speak without a human voice. The earth dies and returns to life. Your own soul carries questions no possession can silence. The Quran addresses the mind, heart, conscience, and destiny together.
Look carefully — but do not stop at looking. A sign has fulfilled its purpose when it leads the traveler toward the One to whom it points.
